Annually the Academic Senate for California
Community Colleges calls for nominations for
one of the two faculty seats on the Board of
Governors. We seek your assistance in identifying
outstanding faculty members who are knowledgeable
about the issues facing faculty and others in
the community colleges. We are particularly interested
in candidates who represent and who have shown
commitment to issues of diversity, and, as you
will see on the enclosed sheet, the Academic
Senate encourages leaders with a variety of experiences
to consider applying for this position. We ask
that you make all members of your faculty aware
of this opportunity to serve.
As you may know, two faculty members serve on
the Board of Governors, serving staggered two-year
terms. While the Governor makes the final appointment
of all members of the Community College Board
of Governors, in the case of faculty appointments,
he makes the appointment from a list of recommendations
put forward by the Academic Senate for California
Community Colleges. Since the Governor has not
appointed faculty to the Board since 2005, this
year we are seeking candidates for both terms:
2009 – 2010 (one-year term) and 2009 – 2011
(two-year term).
This link above is a description of the criteria
the Academic Senate's Executive Committee will
use
to select nominees. In addition, we would expect
candidates to be articulate, capable of presenting
a reasoned argument on issues of educational
policy, and to have knowledge of statewide educational
issues. Nominations may be made by an individual,
the local senate, or the Executive Committee
of the Academic Senate. In each case, the nominee
is strongly encouraged to include a letter of
endorsement from the faculty member's local academic
senate. If a faculty member has been previously
nominated and would like to be reconsidered,
a letter of intent should be sent to the Senate
Office with a current resume.
Candidates for nomination must submit a letter
of introduction and a current resume outlining
relevant professional activities. All original
materials must be received in the Academic Senate
Office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2008.
NO FAXES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Nominees will be selected and interviewed by
the Executive Committee on
December 5, 2008. PLEASE INFORM YOUR
NOMINEE TO HOLD THIS DATE. All candidates will be notified
of the outcome of the nomination process. Thank
you for your assistance in identifying worthy
and qualified candidates.
