Unlike many of our other events, the Teaching Institute each year will change its focus. This year, the focus is on the professional development for counseling faculty.
General Information The 2008 Counseling Faculty Development
Institute:Counseling
for Student Success,
targeted specifically to counseling faculty
in the California Community Colleges,
provides a unique development opportunity
for all counseling faculty; general,
EOPS, athletic, etc. Each day will be
filled with presentations and discussions
pertaining to ideas and best practices
that are of interest to counselors in
California Community Colleges, as well
as relevant statewide activities, such
as the Basic Skills Initiative, Statewide
Career Pathways, and efforts at addressing
the Board of Governor’s assessment
resolution. The Institute will address
topics such as counseling specific populations,
articulation information that counselors
need to know, and general strategies
for effective counseling. There will
be opportunities throughout the Institute
to ask questions, pursue discussions,
share issues and strategies, and develop
a network of support. There will also
be some time to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Theme Predicting, Planning, and Compensating: Weathering the Changing Climate in California’s Community Colleges
As the California Community Colleges confront the “perfect storm” and prepare for “tidal wave II”, our counseling faculty stand at the ready to deal with the changing demographics in our state and their impact on education. Like weather forecasts, our predictions may not be accurate, but we can plan for change and compensate when the weather takes a turn for the worse. The counseling faculty, due to their close contact with students, are tasked with responding to sudden climate changes, expected to be the first to notice the rain, and able to adjust the temperature as needed. Counseling faculty must detect, respond to, and effect change. This institute seeks to provide them with the tools to do so.
