Congratulations on your recent election as
student representatives! On behalf of the
Student Senate for California Community Colleges,
I wish you a successful year as you serve
and represent your college's students. We
look forward to working with you this academic
year.
The Student Senate, established to work in
conjunction with local associated student
organizations, serves as the representative
voice of California's 2.6 million community
college students to our state leaders and
partners in education. It is our job to daily
bring forward your concerns, thoughts, ideas
and suggestions to our policy makers, reminding
them of the hopes and dreams we have for
our state that are achieved through education.
As the newly elected President, it is with
joy and honor that I invite you to attend
our Fall 2008 General Assembly, held at the
Doubletree Hotel in San Jose, California
from October 24-26, 2008. We ask that you
lend us your voice as we establish a policy
agenda that best represents the interests
and needs of the next generation of community
college students.
This fall we come to you with the theme "Democracy
in Action: Strengthening Bridges of Understanding." Beyond
allowing for you to present resolutions for
ratification, we will provide an array of
breakout sessions to grow and strengthen
your grassroots campaigns and advocacy, to
educate you about pressing statewide issues
and to create networking opportunities for
all student governments.
We will also be holding elections to fill
two vacant Senator at-Large positions and
are currently accepting candidate statements
for these positions. Any student in attendance
at the General Assembly may run. Nominations
will close after the first general session
on October 24, 2008. Please review the enclosed
SSCCC Elections Procedures for more information.
We hope that each of our recognized 111 local
student governments will participate in this
important event and will send a delegate to represent
them at this Assembly. A registration link is
available on our website at www.studentsenateccc.org.
The college delegate is selected by your respective
student government and is offered a discounted
rate for attending. Serving as a delegate is
a wonderful learning opportunity and no prior
experience is necessary. We have enclosed a number
of resources to help you along the way.
I look forward to meeting you at the Fall 2008
General Assembly in San Jose, California!
Collegially,
Richael K. Young, President
Student Senate for California Community Colleges
