In the past few months, many people have told me that all politics is local. In our system, with 109 colleges and 2.6 million students, and in our work as local senate leaders, we have a pretty good sense of this. In my three years as a student leader, I have met many of you from across the state and heard your stories. As diverse as they may be, we all have one thing in common: the fight for an affordable, quality education. With the wave of political change sweeping our nation, our state, and even our campuses, now is the time for us to join together. Through our diversity come different perspectives, innovative ideas, and new solutions. With this in mind, we have chosen our theme for the 2008 Spring Student Senate General Assembly, "Strength through Diversity, United in Action." The General Assembly will feature a rich mixture of new and recurring topics while seeking to emphasize our strengths and the diversity of our perspectives. With the challenges we face ahead, we will place a particular emphasis on action. Each of our discussions will provide and solicit recommendations for actions for your return to campus. We will also be holding our annual elections for the 08’-09’ Student Senate Council.
It is our hope that this Spring’s Student Senate General Assembly will facilitate the action needed to protect the future of our Community Colleges. It is essential that you be heard in our discussions as we shape policy and set the agenda for our work across California. Register your local senate online now. All of the event information is available at this link, and remember: the deadline for the reduced early registration rates is Monday, April 14th and the hotel reservation deadline is Friday, April 18th. We also want to encourage you to check out our new official website at http://www.studentsenateccc.org for materials and updates for the General Assembly and all of the other work of the Senate. On behalf of the Student Senate Council, we are excited about the discussions ahead and are looking forward to joining you May 2nd- 4th at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles (213-624-1000) for the 2008 Spring General Assembly.
Collegially,
Andrew R. Anzalone
