Welcome to the Student Senate
General Assembly Spring 2009
Dear Student Leaders,
What a thrilling year it has been for us to serve as student leaders! Even
amidst the looming threats of cuts and fee hikes, it has been a remarkable
and triumphant year for California community college students. All across the
state, students rose to the occasion, fiercely advocating for their rights
to affordable and accessible higher education. Nonetheless, we still face much
ahead and must remain alert and ready for calls to action.
The Student Senate, established to work in conjunction
with local associated student organizations,
serves as the representative voice of California's
2.7 million community college students to our
state leaders and partners in education. It is
our job to daily bring forward your concerns,
thoughts, ideas and suggestions to our policy
makers, reminding them of the hopes and dreams
we have for our state that are achieved through
education.
It is with joy and honor that I invite you to attend the Student Senate s
Spring 2009 General Assembly, held at the Doubletree Hotel San Diego-Mission
Valley in San Diego, California from May 1-3, 2009. We ask that you lend us
your voice as we establish a policy agenda that best represents the interests
and needs of the next generation of community college students.
This spring we come to you with the theme Fighting the Fiscal Meltdown:
Tools for a Stable Future. Beyond allowing for you to present resolutions
for ratification, we will provide an array of breakout sessions to grow and
strengthen your grassroots campaigns and advocacy, to educate you about pressing
statewide issues and to create networking opportunities for all student governments.
We will also be holding elections to fill ten Senator At-Large positions for
the 2009-2010 academic year and are currently accepting candidate statements
for these positions. Any student in attendance at the General Assembly may
run. Nominations will close after the first general session on May 1, 2009.
Please review the enclosed SSCCC Elections Procedures for more information.
We hope that each of our recognized 111 local
student governments will participate in this
important event and will send a delegate to represent
them during the voting processes. A registration
link is available on our website at www.StudentSenateCCC.org or
you can visit the registration page directly
at www.asccc.org/events/stlead.htm.
The college delegate is selected by your student
government and is offered a discounted rate for
attending. Serving as a delegate is a wonderful
learning opportunity and no prior experience
is necessary. We have enclosed a number of resources
to help you along the way.
I look forward to meeting you at the Spring
2009 General Assembly in San Diego, California!
Collegially,
Richael K. Young, President
Student Senate for California Community Colleges
