Charge The Counseling and Library Faculty Issues
Committee is responsible for review of policies,
procedures, administrative requirements and general
information regarding counseling and library
issues; discussion of current counseling and
library programs; and consensus development on
issues through study and research. The committee
presents position statements and policy recommendations
to the Academic Senate Executive Committee.

Support the concept that
each college should have a trained academic
athletic counselor/faculty advisor, and recommend
to local senates that they work with their
counseling and athletic departments to ensure
that athletes receive academic advising and
counseling from a trained academic athletic
counselor/faculty advisor.

regarding
this issue. A Rostrum article dedicated to
this topic will be written in order to highlight
this topic before this work is declared completed.

2.2
Generate resources for
local faculty
Work to ensure
that the implementation of the 50% law not
be used to constrain or cap the hiring of
counseling and library faculty, and Resolved
that the Academic Senate research the appropriate
library and counseling staffing standards,
examine options to address the problem, and
consider whether to increase the 50% law
to a percentage that would include the salaries
of all faculty, not just the salaries of
classroom instructors.

guidelines for counseling faculty.

The 2006-2007 CLFIC has written suggested
universal standards of practice for all
community college counseling programs:
the standards will become part of the revised
Standards paper on Counseling. The revision
is part of a joint task force being formed
with members from the Chancellors Advisory
Committee, 4CA, CLFIC. The task force work
should be done by the end Spring 2008.
A breakout was held during the Spring 2007
plenary session: that session reviewed
the standards and asked for state wide
counselor input.

Write a position
paper on good practices on the role of local
academic senates in student preparation and
success and student services in such areas
as counseling, transfer centers, transfer
alliance, etc.
Advise local academic senates of their
duties and responsibilities in the area
of student preparation and success and
student services, as required by number
5 in the list of eleven academic and professional
areas in Title 5 Regulations for strengthening
local senates.

on this subject and will begin gathering
information to determine if a paper can be
developed.

Direct the
Executive Committee to work with the English
and counseling faculty to develop a statement
of good practice in using diagnostic instruments
and multiple measures to assure appropriate
placement of students in writing and composition
courses.

CLFIC will wait and see the outcome of the
work of the committee addressing the resolution.

motivational letter automatically generated
through their Management Information Systems
(MIS) to students completing 45 degree applicable
units which includes a list of courses needed
to complete their Associate degree.

automatic degree audit with a follow-up letter
for students who complete 60 degree applicable
units and the issuance of degrees when students

Prepare a comprehensive
paper regarding student athletes that would
address the obstacles and challenges they
face in achieving academic success (AA degree
and/or transfer), analyze demographic data
and student equity factors, and recommend
model support programs.

an existing NCAA paper may offer what is

Confirm
our focus on students in our decision-making

funding of local and statewide programs which
research and address the needs of student

and counseling interventions that increase
student success in retention, degree completion,
transfer, basic skills development, and career

principles as stated in the adopted papers.
This second issue in this resolution is under
discussion in the Committee as well as in
the Consultation Council Task Force.
Work with other faculty
organizations to seek adoption of an amendment
to Title 5 Regulations (§51027) governing
community college transfer programs to require
that transfer center directors or coordinators
meet the minimum qualifications for the counseling
discipline.
