The work of the Legislative
and Governmental Relations Committee is on hiatus.
Committee
Charge The Legislative and Governmental Relations
Committee is responsible for providing the President
with background information on all legislation
related to academic and professional matters.
Through research and analysis, and representation
on appropriate advocacy groups, the Committee
will provide the President and the Executive
Committee with recommendations on such legislation.
The Committee is also responsible for providing
legislative alerts to the local senates, identifying
liaison persons with legislators, and for providing
support to local senates regarding California's
legislative process as it has bearing on academic
and professional matters. It is the goal of the
Committee to provide the President and the Executive
Committee with the resources to ensure that the
Senate is recognized as the voice of authority
with the Legislature and Governor's Office in
the areas of academic and professional matters.

Oppose the
transfer provision of H.R. 3975 (Hurricane
Regulatory Relief Act of 2005, as of October
6, 2005); and urge local senates to discuss
the impact of this proposed federal mandate

At the direction of the ASCCC President, the chair has provided testimony,
based on resolutions and actions of the ASCCC, at several legislative
hearings.
Support legislation that
repeals certain provisions of the Patriot

Advocate and reaffirm with
the Legislature that the faculty has the
primary role and expertise on issues of curriculum
and validation of prerequisites needed for

Ongoing. Argument of faculty primacy in curriculum
is used in testimony and discussions in legislation
regarding curriculum issues.
Share with the Legislature
its concern about AB 1972 and its impact
on full-time tenure track faculty positions,
and encourage legislators to confer with
the Academic Senate in developing bills directed
towards alleviating the state’s nursing
shortage, and work with the Legislature to
implement some of the remedies proposed in
the Academic Senate paper, Status of Nursing

any federally imposed standardization of
higher education threatens the high quality,
dynamic and innovative system of higher education
that is a central component of American democracy
and an inspiration to freedom loving people
the world over, and oppose any federal attempt
to standardize higher education, and determine

appropriate legislators, intersegmental groups,
and the federal government the opposition
of our 109 colleges and 58,000 professors
