Emeritus Status for Paul Setziol

Whereas, The Bylaws of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges include procedures and criteria for conferring the status of senator emeritus on individuals;

Whereas, Paul Setziol has satisfied those requirements as a retired faculty member of the California Community College system who has completed the required five (5) years of significant service to the Academic Senate:

Academic Senate Annual Report 2017

Over the past two years, the Academic Senate has been implementing the Strategic Plan adopted by the delegates at the Spring 2015 Plenary Session. As we move forward in the third and final year of the plan, this annual report reflects last year’s accomplishments and provides updates on the goals and priorities identified by the ASCCC Executive Committee for the 2016-17 year.

Honor and Thank Emeritus Chancellor Brice Harris

Whereas, Brice Harris came out of a well-earned retirement to serve as chancellor of the California Community Colleges from November 2012 until April 2016;

Whereas, Brice Harris assumed the role of chancellor at the end of a difficult economic period for the State of California and the California Community Colleges and led the Community College System forward to new successes with determination, efficiency, and enthusiasm for the capacity and potential of every student the system serves;

Mentoring Programs for Part-Time Faculty

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has long-standing positions[1] in support of the creation of local faculty mentoring programs as stated in resolution 9.06 F90, which calls for local senates to create mentoring programs for all new full-time and part-time faculty members, and 12.07 F92, which calls for local senates to encourage departments and divisions to assist in providing mentoring services to new part-time faculty;

Local Senates Handbook

The Local Senates Handbook has been compiled by the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges’ Relations With Local Senates Committee to be a resource for new and experienced academic senate presidents, providing them with information and context to support them being effective faculty leaders.

Standing Committee Part-time Faculty

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) should make every effort to support the integration of part-time faculty into the institutional processes, and at present the participation of part-time faculty in governance, curriculum decision making, and effective student advising is significantly less than that of full-time faculty;

Revise the Academic Senate Rules

Whereas, The Academic Senate Rules outline election procedures for the Executive Committee, procedures for filling vacancies on the Executive Committee, and the relationship between the Academic Senate Foundation and the Executive Committee and list the Senate’s standing committees;

Whereas, The Standards and Practices Committee reviewed and revised the Rules to ensure that they were consistent with all applicable laws, Academic Senate policies and procedures, and the proposed revisions to the Academic Senate Bylaws; and

Revise the Academic Senate Bylaws

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that is required to follow nonprofit laws and California Corporations Code, and the ASCCC bylaws serve as a foundational legal document that outlines the structure of the organization and provides an operational framework to comply with those laws;
