Affirmative Action: Representation

Whereas in 1970, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges adopted a resolution to "Urge local senates to support the increased membership of ethnic minorities on faculties at large, and increased participation by ethnic minorities in local senates, the Academic Senate, and on accreditation teams," and

Whereas the resolution was reaffirmed in 1992, and

Whereas despite previous resolutions, little progress has been made in implementing these two resolutions encouraging diversity in local senates and elsewhere,

Support Affirmative Action

Whereas affirmative action programs do not use quotas, lower standards, or support any type of discrimination, and

Whereas attempts are now being made to eliminate affirmative action programs, even though elements of discrimination continue to permeate the American society,

Affirmative Action Workshops

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has historically supported affirmative action in all avenues of human endeavor including hiring, education, and societal issues, and

Whereas affirmative action programs assist in giving women, minorities, and disabled persons an equal opportunity in hiring, education, and receipt of government contracts, and

Whereas affirmative action programs help to diversity' the workforce, and

Whereas affirmative action programs were implemented to correct the results of past discrimination,

Reasonable Accommodations

Whereas the resolution “Be it resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges urge local senates to assist their faculty to become fully informed about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and about the implications of this Act as it affects community colleges” was passed at the Fall 1993 session, and

Whereas local academic senates have had minimal information provided to them by the Academic Senate to help them in this resolve, and

Opposition to Gov. Wilsons Position on Affirmative Action

Whereas Gov. Wilson, through an executive order and a lawsuit, is seeking to end all affirmative action programs in educational programs targeting historically underrepresented minorities and women in California Community Colleges, and

Whereas these actions constitute a direct violation of academic freedom and joint governance procedures,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges reaffirm its support of affirmative action and oppose the actions of Gov. Wilson to undermine affirmative action, and

Retention of Underrepresented Faculty

Whereas the changing demographics have promoted the hiring of underrepresented faculty and community colleges have not addressed the need of retention by developing support programs of new hires,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges support the development and implementation of mentorship and other support programs for new faculty.

Leadership Programs for Underrepresented Faculty

Whereas the changing demographics at certain levels of community college staffing have had an impact at many colleges, but the issue of underrepresented faculty reaching parity in leadership positions has not been addressed,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to develop proposals that would facilitate community college leadership programs for underrepresented faculty.
