Change in the Discipline List: Chemistry

Whereas the San Bernardino Valley College Academic Senate has not had an opportunity to review the proposed revision to the disciplines list,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges accept the following proposed change for the chemistry discipline for review and discussion during the discipline review process: Master's in chemistry or biochemistry OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology or geochemistry OR the equivalent.

Addition to the Disciplines List: Engineering Technology

Whereas fiscal problems have impacted higher education's ability to add new programs at will in California, and

Whereas engineering technology is an emerging discipline and master's programs are offered in adjoining states, and

Whereas the accrediting agency for engineering technology, the National Technology Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) requires instructors in an accredited program to hold master's degrees,

Resubmission of Mathematics Discipline

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges accept for discussion the resubmission of the following change in the discipline of mathematics to add engineering or computer science as follows: Master's in mathematics or applied mathematics, OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in statistics, physics, mathematical education, engineering or computer science OR the equivalent.

Multicultural Educational Methodology for New Interns

Whereas the great impact on our society of the rapidly changing student demographics has not been adequately addressed, and

Whereas some California community colleges have programs that include graduate teaching interns,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to propose multicultural educational methodology training for all new graduate teaching interns.

Evaluation of Local Equivalency Processes

Whereas AB 1725established the use of equivalencies to faculty minimum qualifications for hire, and

Whereas AB 1725 called for the regular evaluation of the minimum qualification process including the use of equivalencies in local districts, and

Whereas such evaluation has not been performed as of this date,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges urge the Board of Governors to perform an evaluation of local processes for minimum qualifications including the use of equivalencies, and

Disciplines and Equivalencies

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has always supported quality instruction, and Section 87357.(a)(1) of AB 1725 states that the Board of Governors shall "with regard to minimum qualifications for faculty, consult with, and rely primarily on the advice and judgment of the statewide Academic Senate," and

75:25 Survey

Whereas the spirit of 75:25 full-time/part-time faculty ratio for credit instruction goal implied district support for a core of full-time faculty, and

Whereas the full-time/part-time noncredit ratio of instruction throughout the state is currently not known,

Hiring Recommendations

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges direct the Executive Committee to seek legislative reform through the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC) that would require local boards of trustees to explain in writing the reasons for rejecting CEO and screening/hiring committee recommendations for filling faculty positions.

Shared Governance Compliance

Whereas the intent of AB 1725 was to establish shared governance reflecting a primary role for faculty in academic and professional matters, and

Whereas many local senates have not reached satisfactory levels of governance as granted to them by Title 5. Section 53200-203, and

Whereas it is estimated that 30 percent of the community colleges have no established shared governance agreements with their senates, yet all have reported to the Chancellor's Office that they do,
