List of Programs

Whereas there are many programs outside our system that provide assistance to us and to our students, and

Whereas these programs, such as mentor programs, high school articulation, and bridging projects such as the Puente Project, are not known by or easily accessible to our faculty, and

Whereas the compiled information concerning these programs would be valuable to all connected with community colleges,

High School Brochure

Whereas the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges has adopted a recommendation that the high school brochure developed by the Academic Senate be distributed to high school and community college faculty, administrators, and students,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges urge local senates to distribute the high school brochure to college faculty, administrators, and students, and

New Majority Survey Questionnaire

Whereas a study entitled "A Greater Role for Faculty in Support of the New Majority Student" consisted of a "Student Needs Survey" and a "Faculty Development Programs Survey," and

Whereas the "Student Needs Survey" produced a 67 per cent response and the "Faculty Development Programs Survey" a 31 per cent response, and

Whereas a larger sampling would provide more conclusive findings,

Resolved that the Executive Committee send the New Majority survey questionnaire to those colleges that did not respond in order to complete arid update the original results.

Chancellor as Ex-Officio Senate Member

Whereas the California Community College system is in a process of reform, and

Whereas one aspect of that reform is to make the community colleges more like the UC and CSU in terms of governance, and

Whereas the California Community Colleges Board of Governors recently implemented a consultation process that recognizes the Academic Senate as the primary academic policy recommending body,

Electronic Communication

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has a record of supporting the MJC infonet, and

Whereas there is a present need for rapid access to materials from the Chancellor's Office, and

Whereas there is a need to be cost-effective,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges explore with the Chancellor's Office procedures which would allow for electronic transmission of Chancellor's Office materials to local senates.

Teleconferences

Whereas communication among California Community Colleges can be improved,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges not only continue, but also expand, participation in teleconferences on issues and research pertinent to academic senates, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges explore teleconferences on issues as a supplement to the infonet to improve communication.

Carl D. Perkins Act

Whereas the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act is a source of funds for community colleges and K-12, and

Whereas the act expired this year and funding is therefore jeopardized,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges support reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act, and

Students - Student Services

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend to local senates that local California Community Colleges honors and scholars programs actively pursue and support increased recruitment, student services outreach, scholarships, and other support systems in order to promote and increase opportunities for the underrepresented student's persistence, performance, retention, and transfer.
