TASSC North Regional Meeting

Event Dates
Deadline to Register/Application Deadline

ASCCC’s Transfer, Articulation, and Student Services (TASSC) Committee is pleased to announce the TASSC Regional Meetings.

Student learning relies on the discipline expertise and teaching mastery in the classroom; however, helping students to plan their educational path and achieve their goals is the job of all faculty with student services faculty being essential players in the success of our students.  Counselors and other student services faculty help students navigate course requirements, student support services, transfer agreements, and the many other pitfalls that can slow students down on their journeys.  Because of the critical nature of the work student services faculty do, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges is offering a series of meetings to help all faculty understand recent developments in regulations and initiatives that impact student service areas and how they can play a role in addressing these changes locally. This daylong event (one in the north and one in the south) features presenters from colleges across the state; general sessions and breakouts on many topics related to associate degrees for transfer, transfer agreements with the UC system, credit for prior learning, the Educational Planning Initiative, challenges facing general education and, of course, guided pathways. Join us and take away important updates and effective strategies for improving addressing the needs of students as they make their journey through your college.

The California Community College system is in a time of transition and change at levels not seen in decades. Breakout #A  Course Substitution and Associate Degrees for Transfer

Presenters:
LaTonya Parker, Morena Valley College, ASCCC Executive Committee
Dave DeGroot, Allan Hancock College, TASSC Committee Member

The number of requests for course reciprocity among community colleges is increasing throughout the state due to the number of students that attend more than one college. In this breakout, attendees will learn how to implement effectively a reciprocity process that can eliminate barriers for students while at the same time cut the cost of higher education and reduce the necessity of course repetition.

Breakout #B  AB 705: An Update

Facilitator: Clarisa Veras, Los Rios Community College District, TASSC Committee Member
Presenter, Ginni May, Sacramento City College, ASCCC Executive Committee

Description: All colleges, regardless where they may be in experimenting or adopting multiple measures for placement in English, ESL, or math are now asking “what’s next?” regarding the passage of AB 705 and its implementation. In this update/discussion, presenters will provide updates on the Chancellor’s Office’s workgroup on AB 705 and lead a discussion in implementation approaches.

1:40 p.m. to 2:40 p.m.   Second Breakout Session

Breakout #C   The Educational Planning Initiative

Facilitator: Maurice Geddis, Sacramento City College, TASSC Committee Member

Presenters: Carla Rosas, Senior Academic/Student Services Manager Student Success & Retention Programs, Los Medanos College and Clinton Slaughter, Dean, Student Services, Butte-Glenn Community College District

The Educational Planning Initiative (EPI) that grew out of the California Community Colleges Task Force on Student Success recommendations in 2012 obligated colleges to “develop and use technology applications to better guide students in their educational process.” Over the last five years, the EPI set out to create technology solutions designed to help students clarify their short and long term goals and provide guidance as they progress through their academic careers. In this presentation, presenters will discuss the success the EPI has seen at its pilot colleges with tools such as CCC MyPath, Starfish’s Degree Planning and Early Alert systems, and others, and discuss how these tools naturally align with the principles of guided pathways being developed at colleges systemwide.

Breakout #D  Credit for Prior Learning (Dual Enrollment, Credit for Military Service, External Examination (AP, IB, CLEP)

Facilitator: Clarisa Veras, Los Rios Community College District, TASSC Committee Member

Presenter: Dolores Davison, Secretary, ASCCC Executive Committee

As more students are arriving at colleges with experience from prior work or military service, colleges are confronting the question of how to award college credit that is appropriate and accurately reflects the prior experience.  Several ASCCC committees and system partners are working to find solutions and effective practices for addressing these students. This breakout will update attendees about these efforts, along with a discussion of how colleges may want to begin to look at the question of credit for prior learning.

This Regional Meeting concludes at the end of the second breakouts.  Thank you for attending!
