Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has consistently supported the highest academic standards for institutions, faculty, and students, and
Whereas there have been concerns expressed that the State Department of Education "approved" institutions are not the equivalent in quality to accredited institutions, and
Whereas such "approved" institutions can now legally award bachelor's, master's, and even Ph.D. degrees, and
Whereas the phrase "degree approved by the Department of Education" appearing in advertisements for such institutions may be misleading to the public,
Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges ask the California Postsecondary Education Commission to re-examine the legal basis for "approved" institutions and make recommendations to the legislature, and
Resolved that the California Postsecondary Education Commission be asked to study the appropriateness of the degree-granting authority of such approved institutions.
