SB 1399 was taken for discussion to the Intersegmental Council of Academics where the Legislator attended an it was agreed that the issues in the bill should not be resolved by legislation but instead by consultation and the parties involved have dealt with the issues by way of internal institutional policies.

Whereas there has recently been legislation proposed that would inhibit academic freedom (SB 1399), and

Whereas the Academic Senate of the California State Universities has

Resolved to oppose the language of SB 1399 (Appendix B), and

Whereas it is our understanding that the bill has been withdrawn by the author after dialogue with the Academic Senates of CSU and California Community Colleges,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges oppose any legislation that limits an instructor's choice of teaching materials, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommend that issues concerning academic freedom be addressed by the committee reviewing the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure. (Appendix C)
