Change to the Disciplines List - Speech

Resolved, That the Academic Senate recommend that the Board of Governors adopt the following proposed change in the Disciplines List for Speech: Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English OR The equivalent, and

Change to the Disciplines List - Physical Education

Resolved, That the Academic Senate recommend that the Board of Governors adopt the following proposed change in the Disciplines List for Physical Education: Master's in physical education, or education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education, or exercise science OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy OR The equivalent.

Proposals for Changes to the Disciplines List

Whereas, There appears to be confusion in the field about writing and amending proposals for changes to the Disciplines List;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate offer technical assistance to authors for developing and proposing changes to the Disciplines List; and

Resolved, That the Academic Senate review the process for submission of proposals for changes to the Disciplines List to facilitate this assistance.

Disciplines List Study

Whereas, Resolution 10.02 F01 called upon the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges to update the titles of degrees listed in the Disciplines Lists of minimum qualifications to accommodate changing major titles and other considerations;

Whereas, Resolution 10.02 F01 also called upon the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges to review the disciplines not requiring a master's degree and update them to reflect workforce, business, technological, and other changes; and

Single-Course Equivalencies and Sub-Disciplines

Whereas, The Executive Committee of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges previously declared Resolution 10.01R S01 establishing the possibility of sub-disciplines unfeasible because of its negative impact on the Disciplines List process;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate reaffirm its opposition to single course or sub-discipline equivalencies; and

Resolved, That the Academic Senate work with the Chancellor's Office to ensure that the policies and regulations we have already recommended are enforced.

Establishment of Sub-disciplines

Whereas, More and more courses within disciplines, especially occupational disciplines, require specialized experience; and

Whereas, The practice of hiring instructors who are minimally qualified to teach all courses in a discipline limits a campus' ability to offer certain speciality courses;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate explore the possibility of recommending a change in the Education Code that would establish sub-disciplines within primary disciplines so that faculty with specific expertise could be hired; and
