Tenure

Whereas a function of tenure is to maximize the freedom of faculty to provide society with innovative pedagogies, widely disseminated and diverse perspectives on issues and values, and

Whereas this function is widely misunderstood by the public and by the legislature, both locally and nationally,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges wholeheartedly affirm the value and worth of tenure and direct the Executive Committee to assign the writing of a position paper on tenure to the appropriate committee, and

Academic Freedom Statement

Whereas academic freedom is essential to the free search for truth and its free expression, and

Whereas academic freedom is being challenged on many fronts and may be negatively affected by legislation or regulation,

Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges adopt the "AAUP 1940 statement of Principles on Academic Freedom", Sections (a)(b)(c) (Appendix C), and

Resolution to Adopt Roles and Responsibilities of Faculty Academic Chairs: An Academic Senate Perspective

Whereas, Local discussion is essential to successful selection and implementation of any department/division chair structure; and

Whereas, Faculty who serve in these roles become an important part of overall faculty leadership;

Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges adopt the paper Roles and Responsibilities of Faculty Academic Chairs: An Academic Senate Perspective.

Academic Freedom and Tenure

Whereas Resolution 19.02 S95 supported tenure and its essential role in student success, and

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges reaffirmed support for the AAUP 1940 Statement of Principles of Academic Freedom (19.5 S96), and

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges directed the Executive Committee to develop a position paper on Academic Freedom and Tenure (19.4 and 19.6 S96),

Resolved that the Academic Senate adopt the document "Academic Freedom and Tenure--A Faculty Perspective."

Faculty Ethics: Position Paper

Resolved that the Academic Senate receive the paper Faculty Ethics: Expanding the American Association University Professors (AAUP) Ethics Statement as amended, as a guideline regarding community college faculty ethical responsibilities, and

Resolved that the Academic Senate recommend to local senates that they, using their consultation processes, adopt an ethics statement, or revise their existing statement, taking as a point of departure, the recommendations in this expansion of the AAUP Ethics Statement, and
