Code of Conduct

Whereas community college faculty is committed to a collegiate atmosphere, where each college conducts its business affairs in a socially responsible manner, and

Whereas child labor and forced labor are flagrant in some apparel industries, and

Whereas it is not unreasonable to require that those who use college names comply with reasonable ethical standards,

Freedom of Speech

Whereas the Board of Trustees of the South Orange County Community College District has proposed a policy regarding the distribution of materials and speaking on campuses of the two district colleges aimed both at students and at faculty, a policy which would curtail both First Amendment and freedom of speech rights, and

Census

Whereas many federal grants and much federal funding are dependent on numbers of people counted in the 2000 census, and

Whereas some federal grants are awarded based on specific demographics, and

Whereas there may be students reluctant, for a variety of reasons, to participate in the 2000 census,

Resolved that the Academic Senate urge local senates to work with their faculty to educate students on the importance of participating in the 2000 census.

Paper on Noncredit Issues

Whereas, The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges wrote a descriptive and foundational paper in 2006 called "The Role of Noncredit in the California Community Colleges" that was used to provide basic information about noncredit courses and programs; and

Whereas, There is a need for a follow-up paper, or series of papers, addressing quality standards and unique issues in noncredit instruction;

Evaluation of Administrators

Whereas the quality of administration affects every student served by a college, and it is essential to have knowledge of administrative performance to improve and sustain effective and quality administration, and

Whereas AB 1725 clearly states that faculty are to be included in the evaluation of the performance of educational administrators, and

Whereas no guidelines or instruments are readily available for developing and collecting this faculty input,

Global Education

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges has participated in and intends to continue such participation in the Global Education Network Task Force, and

Whereas the values formally adopted by the Task Force are consistent with the values of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges,

Preserving Academic Freedom in the Implementation of +/- Grading

Whereas the intent of the Board of Governors was that +/- grading would be uniformly adopted by all campuses within a multicollege district, and

Whereas the Board of Governors views this as a uniformity of opportunity within a district rather than an obligatory requirement for all faculty to adopt +/- grading, and

Whereas Title 5 Regulations empower faculty to use their best professional judgment and practice in the implementation of an adopted grading scale,

Implementation of Unofficial Withdrawal

Whereas in spring 1995 the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges

Resolved to seek changes in Title 5 Regulations regarding grading policies and procedures to allow for an evaluative symbol other than an F to indicate an unofficial withdrawal by the student after the drop date, with such symbol to be computed in the GPA as 0 grade points, and

Whereas the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges recommended to local academic senates that this symbol be used in situations when there is not enough data to assign a conventional grade, and

Associate of Applied Science Degree

Whereas the California Code of Regulations defines requirements for all Associate degrees, and the provisions for Title 5 55806 set forth identical criteria for the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees, and

Whereas there is little consistency in the requirements for the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees among the California community colleges, and
